Ol Donyo Wuas

The lodge takes its name from the hill that stands behind it, which looks like a spotted cowhide and is known as Ol Donyo Wuas, meaning ‘The spotted hill’ by the local Maasai. A magical land of black-frozen lava flows studded with blazing red-hot poker trees; of shoals of extinct volcanoes wreathed in dense forests and hung with Spanish moss, the Chyulu Hills coil like a sleeping dragon on the lion-gold plains of his treasure. To the west the pink-haloed peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rises like a Hollywood backdrop and all around stretch the mirage miles of Maasai land, dusty, dry and stalked by scarlet herders and dust-plumed cattle. Located in the midst of the isolated and seldom-visited Chyulu Hills, the lodge is ecologically built on lava rock overlooking the vast plains. Kilimanjaro rises from the mists in the distance. The main lodge and the six individual cottages are solidly built of local stone and sinuously twisted wild olive timbers from fallen trees. The high roofs are thatched with palm. Furnishings are designed to fit with the architecture. Rich, dark woods combine with Masai carvings, flowing mosquito nets on four poster beds and soft fabrics.

Location

The Chyulu Hills lie 190 km south-east of Nairobi.
