Tassia Lodge

Tassia is the ideal escape from the world.  It captures all elements of the African bush, tranquil beauty combined with excitement and adventure.  The dramatic setting of the lodge, perched on the edge of the Mokogodo escarpment, gives a mesmerising view of the Northern Frontier District and the sacred Lolokwe Mountain.

The lodge’s distinctive architecture is of Maasai origin and is inspired by the surrounding area. The six individual rooms are all en-suite, with their own unrivalled view.  The open plan sitting and dining area offers a spectacular vista over the natural rock swimming pool and on to the 60,000 acre Lekurruki conservation area.

Tassia lodge is built using local low impact materials.  No trees were cut down and the entire project was constructed with the preservation of the environment in mind.  The lodge uses solar power for electricity and energy-saving hot water heaters...

Location

The district is located on the leeward side of Mount Kenya, forming the arid and semi-arid highlands west and northwest of the mountain. The region spreads north from Nanyuki, from the northern foothills of Mount Kenya to Maralal, northeast to Isiolo, and west to Nyahururu. The region is dominated by the Ewaso Ng-iro and Ewaso Narok rivers, and incorporates the entire Ewaso rivers ecoystems, the Laikipia National Reserve and the Lewa Wildife Conservancy.

The Background

Escaping to Tassia allows for total immersion into the Lekurruki conservation area and insight into the life of the local community.  Tassia was built for the Mokogodo Massai, allowing a symbiotic relationship with community and conservation. Wildlife conservation is a viable alternative land use that compliments the traditional pastoralism. Tassia is closely linked to Borana Ranch and Lewa Wildlife conservancy, both catalysts for conservation in Northern Kenya.

Tassia is situated on the Lekurruki Community Conservation Group Ranch between the Laikipia Plateau and the Northern Frontier District,  neighbouring Il N'gwesi Group Ranch, Borana Ranch.  Borana Ranch and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy are great supporters of Tassia and the Lekurruki Group Ranch.

Accommodation

The lodge's six bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms offer comfortable and inviting accommodation.

Tassia guests can be as sociable or reclusive as they choose, either enjoying the excellent cuisine in the tranquility of their bedrooms or on the pool verandah or joining others at the bar and dining room.

Children are welcome and extra beds can be provided.

Wildlife highlights

The Mokogodo forest has a thriving and diverse population of wildlife, butterflies, birds (over 300 species), plants and trees.  Wild dog, giraffe, impala, gerenuk and kudu can be seen during the day.  The valley in front of the lodge which is full of riverine trees and shrubs, is popular with the elephant and buffalo who frequent the area.  Leopard and smaller cats such as genet, civet and caracal can sometimes be seen on early evening game drives and, nocturnally, aardvark, aardwolf, striped and spotted hyena.

What to see and do

Tassia offers a wide range of activities and is a base for adventure as well as game drives.  Exploring on foot is the main attraction and is the best way to discover the wonders of the wilderness. Walking up dry riverbeds offers an excellent opportunity to view game at close quarters.  After the rains when the luggas are flowing there are idyllic waterfalls and plunge pools for wallowing.  This stunning location lends itself perfectly to bush breakfasts, picnic lunches and sundowners.

In addition, Tassia offers guided camel walks and overnight camping in the bush.

For the intrepid explorer, a climb to the summit of Mount Lossos should not be missed, especially for keen paragliders. Guests are guided and hosted by people who have a deep knowledge and empathy for their surroundings.  The Mokogodo Maasai coexist with the wildlife, which accounts for the abundance of flora and fauna on the Lekurruki Group Ranch.

The stunning swimming pool is built into rocks and surrounded by fig trees.
