Beho Beho

Beho Beho translates as ‘the pioneer’ and refers to this atmospheric camp’s status as the first camp to be established in the northern sector of the Selous. A selection of stone cottages perched on the lower slopes of Namikwera Hill, it offers panoramic views over the intricate braids of the Rufijii river flood plain. A central swimming pool offers magnificent views along the Kipalala valley as well as private sunbathing areas and quiet relaxation in the shade. Always designated as a 'private camp' it has fiercely protected its individuality and privileged location as one of the most 'magical' places it is possible to visit in safari Africa - for privacy and exclusivity. The camp is small and intimate with emphasis placed on a true wilderness experience combined with warm hospitality.

Beho Beho is closed from mid March to early June each year - Seasons vary according to rains and flight schedules.

Location:

The camp is 145 miles south west of Dar es Salaam, and 3 miles from the grave of Frederick Courteney Selous. Selous Game Reserve is in South-east Tanzania, south of Mikumi National Park. Road - Beho Beho is accessible by road with 4WD vehicles only, from either the northern gate and regional park HQ of Matambwe (70kms - 2 hrs) or the western gate of Mtemere (110 km - 3 hours).

Plane - By plane from Dar es Salaam, Beho Beho airstrip is within 1km from the camp on a raised plateau bordered with trenches from the first World War. The flight time is approximately 1 hour.
Train - By scheduled train you can reach Beho Beho from Fuga station, which is a 1½ hour game drive through the plains and dry rivers found in the area. The train takes 4/5 hours along the Tazara railway line, which is the Northern boundary to the Selous.

Accommodation

Beho Beho has 8 individual spacious Bandas, (stone built and palm thatched cottages) furnished with king-sized beds, Zanzibari day beds, writing desks and comfortable furniture. The front of the banda is totally open and extends on to a spacious verandah. The banda can be secured for the night with 'tented curtains' or left open as desired. Each banda has a separate dressing room leading into an en suite bathroom with twin basins, high flush WC and an 'open air' shower. The lodge also offers three luxurious tented bandas raised up high on wooden platforms to afford the best possible views.

The main house

Furnished in the style of a private house with comfortable seating and dining areas the central reception areas have been designed with minimal walls and optimum views. Shaded by palm thatched roofing, they offer a private dining room, communal dining room, bar seating areas and lookouts. There is also a billards room.

Dining and bars

Meals are served in the dining room, private dining room, on the terraces or in the form of bush breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Children

It is felt that this style of camp is not suitable for young children and whilst we do not allow children under 12 years to stay at the camp, parents should consider whether this is the type of camp that is suitable for their child. Children (over 12 years) who have an interest in wildlife and who are comfortable in an adult environment thoroughly enjoy the camp.

A wide range of activities

The Selous is unique among Tanzania’s game areas because it is a game reserve, and not a national park. This means that a wider range of activities are permitted such as; boating, walking and camping safaris. More controversially, large parts of the south of the reserve (90% of the total) are reserved for professional game hunting.

Safaris:

Safaris in the Selous game reserve must be accompanied by an armed game Scout.

Game Drive - These are in the lodge's specially adapted 4WD vehicles which offer raised seating for better game viewing. Game drives are best taken early in the morning or at dusk.

Walking - The wilderness of Africa will be yours as you walk through the bush in the vicinity of Beho Beho. Many different tracks can be followed with either a circular walk returning to the camp or a pre-arranged location can be made for you to be collected by a safari vehicle.

Lake Tagalala & Maji Moto - After a short Game drive you will arrive at Lake Tagalala for your boating safari. The lake is surrounded by a number of natural springs which attracts amazing birdlife as well as a large Hippo and crocodile population. After a bush breakfast a short walk takes you to the hot sulphur springs, Maji Moto where you swim in the deep natural pools before returning to Beho Beho.
