Lake Manze Tented Camp

At the heart of the Selous, on the shores of atmospheric Lake Manze, this beautiful luxury tented camp is both intimate and exclusive. Shaded by doum palms, it overlooks the lake, which is linked to the Rufijii River by a small channel that is especially popular with elephant, hippo, crocodile and birds.

Location:

The camp is located in the Selous Game Reserve, on the banks of Lake Manze. The closest airstrip is Siwandu (one hour’s drive from camp).

Flights are available three or four times a day from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar and from Arusha, Manyara and Ruaha with Coastal Aviation, to Siwandu Airstrip in the Selous Game Reserve.

Accommodation

The camp offers 12 luxury tents shaded by palms and indigenous trees. Spacious and comfortable, they are relatively simple in design. Each has an ensuite bathroom and a private balcony.  There are two family tents (additional room with twin beds).

Dining and bars

There are two restaurant and bar areas.

Children

It is felt that this style of camp is not suitable for young children and whilst we do not allow children under 12 years to stay at the camp, parents should consider whether this is the type of camp that is suitable for their child. Children (over 12 years) who have an interest in wildlife and who are comfortable in an adult environment thoroughly enjoy the camp.

Activities

The Selous is unique among Tanzania’s game areas because it is a game reserve, and not a national park. This means that a wider range of activities are permitted such as; boating, walking, fishing and camping safaris. More controversially, large parts of the south of the reserve (90% of the total) are reserved for professional game hunting.

History

Opened in 1905 by the Germans as a hunting preserve, the Selous’ unprecedented number of game attracted hundreds of white hunters from Europe and America who came in search of game trophies. Perhaps the most famous visitor during this time was American ex-president, Teddy Roosevelt. It is rumoured that the Kaiser gave the reserve as a birthday present to his wife in 1910, which may be why it is sometimes referred to as shamba la bibi ‘fields of the lady’. During World War 1 the area was the scene of clashes between the German and British forces, the most famous of which was the discovery by the British of the German battleship Konigsberg hiding in the Rufiji delta.  In 1982 the reserve was declared a World Heritage Site.
