‘Kipungani allows you to feel the sand between your toes’
This idyllic Indian Ocean hideaway lies on Manda Island, a pristine island adjacent to the world-renowned holiday venue of Lamu, the oldest surviving town on the East African coast. The resort has its own pool and offers windsurfing, water-sking, sailing and deep-sea fishing. A traditional Arab dhow offers trips to the town of Lamu, the oldest surviving town on the East African coast, dominated by an Omani Fort (now a museum). Here, there no cars; only donkeys for transport.
Location
The resort is situated on Manda Island, a short boat ride from Lamu. The island is a 90 minute flight from Nairobi and transfer to the island is by speed-boat (20 minutes), through a wide channel fringed by mangrove swamps.
Accommodation
The resort offers fifteen widely spaced beach cottages, or "grass villas". Rustically styled, abounding in brightly-coloured floor cushions, the walls of each cottage are made from local palm leaf matting, and a coconut thatch roof rises to a steep pitch so as to benefit from the cool of the trade winds. Verandahs face the ocean and each room has its own dressing area with basin, flush WC and fresh-water shower (unheated). There are no doors and windows; rather palm blinds. All rooms have ceiling fans. Sun bleached driftwood furniture and shells decorate the decked terrace, together with hanging "moon beds".
Dining and bars
The resort prides itself on the high quality of its cuisine, offering giant crab claws, sea-food platters and much more.
Child-friendly
The resort welcomes children.
