Kensington Mara West

A small, intimate and exceptionally luxurious camp, Kensington Mara West stands high on the commanding Siria Escarpment, which forms the western boundary of the world-famous Mara reserve. Technically just outside the boundaries of the reserve, but within 2kms of its main gate, the camp enjoys stunning views across the savannah plains. There are just six tents, which are some of the largest and most comfortable offered in the reserve.

World renowned for the breathtaking spectacle of ‘the greatest wildlife show on earth’, the awe inspiring annual migration of the wildebeest, the Mara is Kenya’s most visited protected area. Technically an extension of Tanzania’s renowned Serengeti National Park, the Mara constitutes only 4% of the entire Serengeti ecosystem but its rolling grasslands, meandering rivers and towering escarpments offer one of the world’s most rewarding and evocative wildlife arenas.

Location

The Masai Mara is 270 miles from Nairobi (five hours by road). All weather air strip - less than an hour from Nairobi by plane. The camp is situated on a bend of the Talek River, to the north of the Masai Mara Reserve, only two kilometres away from the Sekenani gate.

Accommodation

Each of the 6 spacious tented chalets is widely spaced amongst the fig trees of the ridge, at eye level with the raptors that soar over the plains. Each offers four areas: a spacious bedroom with two queen beds, a dressing room, bathroom, and an outside furnished verandah. Each tent is furnished, in contemporary Maasai style, by Palacina, the design professionals behind such luxurious properties as The Palms, and Breezes in Zanzibar.

Dining and bars

In the centre of the camp is the mess tent, where 3 meals a day are served to a Pan-African theme. All meals at the camp are freshly prepared by the camp's head chef.

The camp also offers a luxurious tented lounge. On the terrace is a traditional camp fire where evening sundowner cocktails are served.

Child-friendly

Until July 31, 2010 'Kids Stay Free' at all Kensington Camps when they share accommodation with two paying adults.
