Tented Camps, KEN

Ideally located and presented in the time-honoured ‘Out of Africa’ style, these special luxury tented camps (sometimes also called lodges) have little to do with ‘camping’ and everything to do with atmosphere. Usually comprising a central dining and bar area, they are typically surrounded by widely spaced permanent ‘tents’ (with thatched roofs, in-built ensuite bathrooms, luxury furniture and generator-electricity), and often feature a campfire area and/or game-viewing platform or water-hole. 

Ashnil Samburu

Opened in 2008, Ashnil Samburu Camp features 24 tents, which are widely spaced along the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, surrounded by doum palms and acacia trees. The main guest area, also shaded by a canopy of acacia trees, offers a comfortable reception and lounge, a spacious dining room, atmospheric bar and a broad deck, which offers unparalleled game-viewing across the wide reaches of the Uwaso Nyiro River, which is the lifeblood of this otherwise arid northern region.

Base Camp

Mara Base Camp is an intimate tented camp, offering just 12 luxury tents. This traditional East African Safari camp is named after the forest in which it stands (Entim means ‘forest’ in Maa, the language of the Maasai). Situated in the Chalbi Desert, North Eastern Kenya, Kalacha Camp sits on the edge of a permanent oasis. Kicheche Laikipia Camp is a small luxurious tented camp, which stands on the Laikipia Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The camp is surrounded by indigenous forest and overlooks  a waterhole. Offering just six custom-built luxury tents, there is also a central dining tent and safari lounge. The camp lies at the centre of the 110,000-acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which lies on the Laikipia plains 17 kilometres from Nakuru and 217 kilometres from Nairobi.

Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

Kichwa tembo (meaning ‘the elephant’s head) is a large and well-maintained tented camp just outside the National Reserve to the northwest. Overlooking endless, game-filled plains and shaded by dense forest canopy, Kichwa Tembo nestles below the Oloololo Escarpment on the western boundary of the Masai Mara reserve.Most of the camp faces onto rolling lawns with dramatic circular cactus gardens. Kigio Wildlife Camp

Kigio Wildlife Camp is a superb all-suite camp built within beautiful Yellow-fever woodland overlooking the Malewa River, approx. 2kms from Malewa Wildlife Lodge. The camp is built from sustainable pine-wood, local earth from the conservancy, traditional thatch provided by the surrounding community and canvas panels - there has been minimal usage of cement and steel in the construction of the camp.

Kilalinda Camp

Kilalinda camp offers an unprecedented degree of privacy, seclusion and luxury. On the borders of Tsavo East National Park, it stands amid acacia groves and verdant gardens on the banks of the Athi River. Mara Bush Camp

The Mara Bush Camp is a temporary camp located in a riverine forest on the banks of the seasonal Olare Orok River, a favourite basking place for the local hippos. Small and personalized, the camp offers just 10 river front tents, widely spaced for ultimate privacy. The camp is entirely unfenced, thus the animals are free to come and go as they please. Mara Fig Tree Camp

Fig Tree Camp is one of the original Mara camps, located on the banks of the Talek River and enjoying breathtaking views across the plains. Recently completely refurbished it offers a welcoming ambience and a range of both tented and chalet accommodation. Offbeat Meru Camp

Ol Pejeta Bush Camp

Patterson’s Safari Camp
