Ol Kanjau Tented Camp

Ol Kanjau Tented Safari Camp is located midway between the forests of Kilimanjaro and the swamps of Amboseli National Park. Specifically it is on community land, leased from the local Maasai community – all of whom have a share in the benefits delivered by the camp. An area devoted to elephant preservation, the camp is located within the Greater Amboseli Ecosystem, a bridge ecosystem that links the vast Tsavo National Park and the Great Rift Vally and Serengeti-Mara ecosystems in the west. Located midway between the forests of Kilimanjaro and the perennial swamps of Amboseli Park, Ol Kanjau Tented Safari Camp is widescreen Africa at its most classic. The Amboseli elephants live on one of the most productive rangelands in Africa. They are Africa's best studied elephant population, and have the oldest and biggest individuals left on the continent because they have been so well protected from poachers, drought and human behaviour.

Once part of the Great Southern Game Reserve, Amboseli is one of Kenya’s earliest game sanctuaries; it is also one of her most popular attracting over 200,000 tourists per year. Located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Kilima Camp is set amidst 360 aces of mature wooded grounds with stunning views of Africa’s highest mountain and the legendary ’Snows of Kilimanjaro’.

Safari background

Amboseli National Park, Kilimanjaro’s kingdom

Towered over by the magnificent bulk of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,896 m), Africa’s highest mountain, Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s oldest, famous and most-visited parks. Endlessly panoramic, yet comparatively compact, Amboseli National Park is dotted with emerald green swamps in which great herds of elephant wallow; half submerged in the papyrus grasses. The permanent marshlands also provide a potent draw to a wide variety of wildlife, particularly hippos and buffaloes, while offering a haven for the abundant water birds. An International Biosphere Reserve, Amboseli National Park largely constitutes the usually dried-out lakebed of Lake Amboseli, which is surrounded by flat grasslands relieved by very few trees. On the plains are numerous antelopes, spotted hyenas, jackals, warthogs, olive baboons and vervet monkeys. Lions are rare. Observation Hill, a conical peak, which is easily climbed, offers stunning views of both the wildlife and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Spotted hyenas are plentiful, as are jackals, warthogs, olive baboons and vervet monkeys. No longer present in their original numbers, lions can still be found in Amboseli National Park though the famous black-maned lions have long since disappeared, as have the black rhinos that were once so plentiful.
