Sosian

Situated on the northern edge of the Laikipia plateau, the privately owned game ranch of Sosian offers a unique safari experience. The old ranch house, which was built by Italian prisoners of war and has recently been tastefully renovated, looks out across the rolling wilderness of Kenya’s Northern Frontier District.  Sosian is dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and is a member of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum, working to protect Laikipia's wildlife through sustainable land uses such as eco-tourism. The house accommodates 14 guests in seven double cottages. Widely spaced among the tropical gardens, each cottage has either a double or twin beds and an ensuite bathroom. The main house offers a comfortable lounge with log fire, wide verandah and gracious dining room. There is also a swimming pool and croquet lawn.

Location

The house can be reached by private air charter (private air strip adjacent to the house), or by scheduled flights into Nanyuki airport (you will be met by the house’s dedicated driver).

Background

A wide variety of ecosystems are present on Sosian. The northern half of the ranch is dominated by open grass plains dotted with acacia trees. Herds of the rare Grevy's zebra, Grant's gazelle, oryx and other antelope congregate here. The southern part of Sosian is mostly acacia woodland and inhabited by elephant, buffalo, reticulated giraffe and impala. Lion and leopard are seen or heard regularly around Sosian. Even endangered wild dogs, thought to be extinct in Laikipia, have returned to the area in healthy numbers. Bisecting the southern portion of Sosian is the Ewaso Narok River which provides the perfect habitat for hippo, otter and prolific birdlife.

Accommodation

The house accommodates 14 guests in seven double cottages. Widely spaced among the tropical gardens, each cottage has either a double or twin beds and an ensuite bathroom.

Dining and bars

The house offers a gracious dining room with adjacent lounge. A range of meals are prepared by the dedicated chef using primarily locally sourced produce. The house offers a wide range of wines, spirits, beers and soft drinks, which can be served in the bar, on the terrace or privately to the cottages. Bush breakfasts, lunches and dinners can also be arranged.

What to do and see

Sosian offers walking safaris, horse riding around the ranch, day and night game drives, camel safaris, and the chance to involve oneself in the daily life of the ranch. Equally one might choose to relax by the large swimming pool, play croquet or just admire the stunning scenery of Laikipia and the snow capped peaks of Mount Kenya on the horizon. One particular highlight for many guests is the glorious walk up to the waterfalls on the Ewaso Narok River.
