Samburu Game Lodge

Samburu Game Lodge is a traditional Kenyan safari lodge set in extensive grounds on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, which represents the life-blood of this otherwise arid Reserve.  Secluded and peaceful, it shelters in the cool of an acacia grove, where monkeys chatter and a stunning array of birds flutter and call. As for wildlife, Samburu provides one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya for the endangered Grevy’s zebra, the rare beisa oryx and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich whilst large herds of elephant roam the gaunt hills during the day before returning to bathe on the banks of the river in the evening.

Location

The Samburu National Reserve of northern Kenya, conjoined with the smaller but no less attractive Buffalo Springs Reserve, lies 320 kilometres from Nairobi at an altitude of  857 meters above sea level.

Wildlife highlights: elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, jackal, buffalo, hippo, zebra, oryx, gerenuk, gazelle, gerenuk, hyrax and klipspringer. Birds: 395 recorded species.

Accommodation

The Lodge offers a wide choice of rooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom.

Dining and bars

The open-sided Lorokushu Restaurant is presented in traditional African style, with a high vaulted ceiling and traditional thatch. It overlooks the brown waters of the Uaso Nyiro River and can accommodate 120 guests. Evening entertainment includes music from a Samburu flute player. The Crocodile Bar is cleverly sited so as to be on a level with the river bank, and thus allows unique viewing of crocodile, monitor lizards and the elephants and leopards that visit the opposite bank. Towards sunset, bait is put out for the crocodiles, enticing them to venture within feet of those in the bar (in perfect safety). The Vulturine Bar is styled to reflect the abundant wildlife of the area, and also overlooks the river. The swimming pool deck offers its own bar, which also serves snacks.

Conference and event facilities

The conference facility can accommodate up to 100 people, and full banqueting, catering, AV and support services are offered.

Child-friendly

The Lodge welcomes children and accommodation can be arranged to suit family groups.

Activities include:

The lodge offers a wide range of game drives, each of which is accompanied by a trained game-tracker. It also offers its own dance theatre, where displays by authentic Samburu performers are staged most days at around 2.30pm. Services include: Forex services, telephone, VHF and HF radio and hi-speed wireless internet. The lodge also has its own generator, a 24-hour laundry service, a fully-equipped First Aid station and a trained medical nurse on 24 hour standby. Petrol and diesel fuels and mechanical services are available at the Lodges own garage. The Lodge also offers a gift shop and an extensive pool deck.
