Swala Camp

Swala Camp is named after the impala (Swala), which regularly visit. Nestled in a remote pocket of Tarangire National Park, this picturesque safari hideaway is exclusively sited in a copse of majestic acacia trees at the edge of the Gurusi Wetlands. Offering long views of the rolling plains of the savanna, Swala Camp is surrounded by large stands of ancient baobab trees, which offer sanctuary to large family herds of elephants, prolific bird life and dry season concentrations of wildlife.

Location

Tarangire is 114km from Arusha, Tanzania. The national park lies around 7km off the main Arusha-Dodoma road. The Tarangire National Park lies at the core of the much larger Tarangire Conservation Area (TCA), which extends across the Maasai Steppes. This area was once used for trophy hunting until it was restored to the traditional Maasai owners in the late 1990s.

Accommodation

Swala Camp offers nine private, permanent tents, each of which feature ensuite bathrooms (with hot and cold running water, flush WCs and showers) and elevated decks overlooking the waterhole, which attracts wildlife year-round. Each tent is tastefully furnished, featuring elegant pieces made from local materials.

Dining and bars

At Swala Camp, gourmet meals are taken in the comfortable dining tent, with full silver service, Pan-African cuisine and fine wines adding to the "country house under canvas" ambience. Professionally hosted and offering a high degree of personal service, Swala offers a unique ‘Out of Africa’ experience in the true colonial style. Traditional ‘sundowners’ are offered nightly, while the resident leopard often puts in a guest appearance at the waterhole during dinner. The Swala Camp menu will typically include a wide selection of East Africa, Tanzania and traditional safari choices as well as numerous international choices.

Conferences and events

The camp does not offer specific conference facilities but will be happy to quote for small meetings and social gatherings. A wide range of Tanzania incentives can also be arranged in or around the national park.

Weddings and honeymoons

The camp makes an ideal Tanzania wedding destination.

Child-friendly facilities at Swala Camp

The camp welcomes children and will be pleased to supply additional beds.

What to see and do

Swala Camp offers a wide range of game drives in 4x4 safari vehicles. As part of their commitment to this forgotten corner of Tanzania, the staff and management team at Swala have initiated a pioneering community conservation project that has recently led to the building of a school for the children of a village that borders Tarangire. Guests at Swala Camp are offered the privileged opportunity to learn more about these projects and become involved as part of their stay.
