Guided professionally-run white-water rafting on specific stretches of river. All safety equipment is provided plus pre-trip safety talks.
East Africa’s rivers have a rare combination of whitewater (up to grade 5) and rich scenic diversity. They also offer the opportunity to take in some game viewing and bird-watching on the way. Trips are usually designed so as to encourage the full participation of the guests, typically using Avon rubber dinghies which are equipped with optimum safety equipment and operated by qualified guides. Remember to take a change of clothes as you are guaranteed to get wet. You may also need to sign a disclaimer, so check before booking that you are covered by your insurance.
Whilst specific several-day white-water rafting safaris are available, most visitors prefer to select a white-water rafting day trip, which will usually commence with an early-morning collection from the hotel, a short journey to the white-water rafting school, a basic introductory course (supply of necessary safety helmets etc), and a several-hour trip down the river. Typically, a picnic lunch will be provided along the course and, depending on the enthusiasm of the rafters, time will be allotted for swimming in the more peaceful stretches of the river.
As a family day-out, white-water rafting makes the ideal pursuit, and the ‘ride’ can be adapted to suit the age and daring of the children and parents alike.
