South Coast

The Zanzibar South Coast is the number one place in the country to see and swim with dolphins. There are also small fishing villages to explore, other wildlife to see and even a national park which is abundant in exotic fauna and flora and offers many picturesque places. The coastline here is very different from the classic palm-backed lagoon of the east coast. Here a coral rag cliff elevates the waterfront above the ocean and the beaches take the form of small coves rather than broad expanses of sand. It may not have the same party ambiance as the North Coast but it’s certainly worth a visit as the ea has a distinct and authentic atmosphere.

Kizimkazi is the destination for most tourists wishing to stay on the Southern tip of Unguja. It was once the capital when the island was under the power of the pre-Omani Wawinyi Wakuu and is considered to be the oldest habitation on the island.  For those in search of a cultural experience Kizimkazi is where East Africa’s oldest mosque can be found. Unlike any other, non-Muslims can visit this place of worship. Kizimkazi village is actually two places; Kizimkazi Dimbani village and Kizimkazi Mkunguni / Mtendeni Bay 3 km to the South. The Dimbani Mosque and the Miza Miza Caves are points of attraction as is the Dimbani village

Also on the South Coast of Zanzibar is the Fumba Peninsula. This area is one of the most relaxed and friendly areas of the island, but until recently it has only been used as a spot for short day-trips or to see dolphins or the red colobus monkeys in Jozani Forest.

Activities in Zanzibar South Coast

From Kizimkazi, one can see and swim with the dolphins or perhaps for those wishing to keep their feet on solid ground and take a guided walk around the Jozani – Chwaka Bay National Park such as the Pete– Jozani Mangrove Boardwalk which loops around the park through different environments such as mangroves and forest.

Heading back to the water, in Kizimkazi and the Fumba Peninsula there are plenty of opportunities for scuba diving, snorkeling and sailing and with the possibility of seeing more dolphins whilst participating in these activities

Dimbani Mosque

This place of worship dates from 1107 AD. Though disappointing from the outside with only a small plaque indicating its significance, and a rusty unimpressive roof, the mosque retains a tranquil charm within. Guests must remove their shoes, ask before taking photographs and be respectful. Visits are not permitted during prayer-times.

Miza Miza Caves

This cave which is associated with many legends. One should certainly not call out a person’s name in the cave on account of an ancient king’s wife who was turned to stone when her name resounded within
