Jinja

The second largest city in Uganda and the principal industrial centre, Jinja was claimed as the source of the Nile in 1862 by John Hanning Speke and it is from here that the river begins its 6,400 km journey to the Mediterranean. Becoming the headquarters of the colonial protectorate in 1901, in 1908 Sir Winston Churchill wrote’ Jinja is destined to become a very important place in the future of central Africa’, a prophecy that later became a reality as Jinja established a series of industries based on agriculatural production and the power provided by the mighty Owen Falls Hydroelectric Dam. On the shores of Lake Victoria only 80km from Kampala, 114km from Entebbe and 125km from the Kenyan border, Jinja offers a wide variety of recreational activities ranging from sailing, fishing and swimming to golf tennis white water rafting, kayaking, bungy jumping and quad biking.
