Bugungo Wildlife Reserve

This seldom-visited reserve abuts the southern boundary of Murchison Falls National Park and surrounds the Weiga Swamp. Savanna woodland supports black-and-white colobus and olive baboons alongside scattered herds of buffaloes. Defassa waterbucks and bohor reedbucks populate the reserve, and lions, elephants, bushbucks and duikers are occasionally seen. Kalinzu Forest Reserve

A relatively intact tract of rainforest on the Albertine Rift Valley escarpment, this reserve is contiguous with the Maramagambo Forest. Chimpanzees are being habituated here while 1km of forest nature trails have been developed, where trained guides lead night nature trails in search of nocturnal primates and birds. Butterflies are a highlight of this reserve (262 species). Highland birds include yellow-bellied wattle-eyes, Rwanzori turacos and purple-breasted sunbirds.

Kigezi Wildlife Reserve

This reserve acts as a buffer between Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha sector, the Maramagambo Forest, and the heavily populated areas to the south. An area of grassy savanna and Acacia sieberiana woodland, it offers; warthogs, herds of buffaloes, antelopes (including Uganda kobs), defassa waterbucks, bushbucks, topis and oribis, plus occasional lions and giant forest hogs, and a few hippos. Kyambura Wildlife Reserve

An area of rolling savanna dotted with crater lakes, the reserve forms a buffer between the surrounding settled lands and Queen Elizabeth NP, from which it is separated by the Kyambura Gorge. The reserve’s plains wildlife is similar to QE and includes Uganda kobs, defassa waterbucks, warthogs, lions, leopards, elephants and good numbers of buffaloes. Three saline crater lakes periodically attract large numbers of flamingos, which have attempted to nest at Lake Maseche.
