This reserve acts as a buffer between Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha sector, the Maramagambo Forest, and the heavily populated areas to the south. An area of grassy savanna and Acacia sieberiana woodland, it offers; warthogs, herds of buffaloes, antelopes (including Uganda kobs), defassa waterbucks, bushbucks, topis and oribis, plus occasional lions and giant forest hogs, and a few hippos. The dense forest alongside the borders of Maramagambo supports unhabituated chimpanzees, and black-and-white and some Central-African red colobus. Kigezi is a refuge for the elephants that move east from the Rwindi Plain in the DRC and south from Queen Elizabeth NP at the start of the wet season.
Location: 130km west of Mbarara.
