An area of rolling savanna dotted with crater lakes, the reserve forms a buffer between the surrounding settled lands and Queen Elizabeth NP, from which it is separated by the Kyambura Gorge. The reserve’s plains wildlife is similar to QE and includes Uganda kobs, defassa waterbucks, warthogs, lions, leopards, elephants and good numbers of buffaloes. Three saline crater lakes periodically attract large numbers of flamingos, which have attempted to nest at Lake Maseche. Swamps adjoining Lake George support hippos, sitatungas, otters and water birds.
